The Language for Interaction (written and oral) for Students of Engineering
The committee discussed the importance of providing scaffolding for learners. Below, by topic/purpose of the meeting which includes the relevant text type (e.g., email, agenda) with templates as well as appropriate language, much of it formulaic.
Can-Do Statements for Students of Engineering at Israeli Institutions of Higher Education
Based on: COMMON EUROPEAN FRAMEWORK OF REFERENCE FOR LANGUAGES: LEARNING, TEACHING, ASSESSMENT Companion Volume 2020
Prepared by: HINET Engineering SIG
The following Can-Do Statements were developed over a period of about 2 years (Fall 2019 – Summer 2021) by the HINET Engineering SIG with representatives from several universities and colleges representing the diverse teaching and student population in Israel. Throughout that period, we used our collective experiences to attempt to define the learning needs of future engineers in Israel and in a global workforce, define the relevant Can-Do statements, find suitable resources, and share teaching materials. We endeavored to select and adapt the CEFR Can-Do statements to main those challenges.
Genres for Students of Engineering
During the discussions, the committee created a list of genres thought to be particularly relevant to students of engineering. Information about relevant sites was collected, with the intent of suggesting possible tasks appropriate to the genre and topic. Although this work was done prior to a more explicit action-oriented approach, the terms “task” or “real-world task” were used with the understanding that classroom tasks would be interactive, engaging, and relevant to the learners current and/or future contexts. In some cases, “scenarios” are suggested.
There was also the intent to provide sites that would provide some sort of “scaffolding,” with the understanding that students may need support in the target genre or language in order to complete a task.
Regretfully, the work was not completed. Links and descriptions to sites that were collected at the time are listed below according to genre.
