CONFERENCE THEME:

The multifarious ways by which one acquires and teaches a language are well known. Less obvious are the ways by which conscious and thoughtful pedagogy may integrate not only a plethora of methodologies but a range of cultural and socio-linguistic realities. How might our work as language professionals facilitate our students’ navigation of the complex and ever-connected world in which they live? How might it make them more sensitive and self-aware communicators? What is the role of English, specifically, in these aspirations?

While a strong command of English remains, as always, a means toward completing degrees and pursuing careers, English is also a resource for our students’ capacity to understand their increasingly complex worlds. A locus of communication, a meeting point of multiple voices, English is one of the primary means by which our students engage, and will continue to engage, with their pluricultural realities. Connectivity, digital and otherwise, between societies, cultures, and individuals has made our world smaller while simultaneously affording new opportunities for growth, understanding and meaningful exchange.

As such, the English language classroom can serve as a rich and coveted space for integrated, and integrative, learning. Beyond the obvious benefits of a shared scale between our institutions and the rest of the world, implementing the CEFR in our departments has launched a multi-faceted process of deepening our pedagogies and internationalizing our institutions. Now is the time to amplify our resources toward motivating and equipping our students to engage in the marketplace of ideas. Mediation and other communication-based activities such as virtual exchange, action-based learning through real-life tasks and other integrative approaches have the potential for making our profession more relevant—and important—for our students than ever.
